The Australian Melanoma Research Foundation is honoured to announce the inaugural Warren Meanwell Melanoma Research Grant, awarded in 2022 and 2023.
This prestigious grant supports an outstanding melanoma research project focused on improving outcomes for people affected by melanoma.
Warren Meanwell was a father, sportsman, adventurer, business entrepreneur, and passionate advocate for sun safety. An electrician by trade, he spent time working in the mines in Western Australia. Deeply concerned by the impact of skin cancer on mine workers, he began a sun safety awareness campaign in 1994 that encouraged even the most dedicated sun lovers to reconsider their habits.
Warren devoted his life to promoting sun-safe behaviours and providing high-quality, stylish protective clothing for people who enjoy the outdoors. His energy and passion inspired many to adopt safer practices. This work became deeply personal when, in 2006, Warren was diagnosed with malignant melanoma. Like many Australians, he had spent his younger years surfing and sailing with little sun protection.
Despite his diagnosis, Warren remained hopeful and continued to inspire those around him. Even in the face of serious illness, he made sure that medical professionals knew his company was committed to helping others. Warren passed away in December 2010 at the age of 49.
Through their family business, Sun Protection Australia, Warren’s family honour his vision by creating functional UPF50+ clothing, helping people enjoy the outdoors safely and with confidence.
