Regional Skin Health and Early Detection Program
Australians living in regional and remote communities often face significant barriers to accessing skin cancer and melanoma screening services. The Australian Melanoma Research Foundation’s Regional Skin Health & Early Detection Program helps bridge this gap by bringing free skin spot checks and skin health education directly to communities with limited access to specialist care.
Delivered by qualified skin cancer nurses, the program provides free initial skin assessments, helping to identify suspicious lesions that may require further investigation or treatment. By removing cost barriers and improving access to early detection services, the program aims to support better health outcomes and increase awareness of melanoma and skin cancer prevention.
The impact of the program is already evident. During a recent community visit to Lameroo, South Australia, 54 free skin checks were conducted in just five hours. Nine people were referred for further assessment, including two individuals with suspected melanomas requiring treatment.
With the support of donors, partners and community organisations, AMRF is working to expand the Regional Skin Health & Early Detection Program to more regional and remote communities across Australia, helping more people access potentially life-saving skin checks close to home.
