Adelaide University Dermatology + Plastics Society (AUDPS) once again stepped beyond the lecture theatre this year, joining the Adelaide Melanoma March in a powerful show of support for melanoma awareness and research.
What began as an opportunity to complement classroom learning quickly became something far more meaningful, bringing together students, survivors, and the wider community in a shared commitment to prevention, early detection, and patient-centred care.
What inspired AUDPS to get involved in the Melanoma March this year?
This is the second year AUDPS has participated in Melanoma March, and we hope to continue being involved each year. We were inspired to take part because it provides a meaningful way to complement the limited dermatology teaching in our curriculum while engaging students in an important, real-world cause.
It was especially rewarding this year to see strong involvement not only from the committee, but also from students across the wider medical cohort. Being a part of Melanoma March helped raise awareness about melanoma within both the student body and the broader community.
The event also highlighted the strong sense of community that surrounds cancer advocacy, bringing together survivors, families, and supporters. For us medical students, it was a valuable reminder of the real-life impact of melanoma beyond textbooks, and reinforced the importance of prevention, early detection, and patient-centred care.
What was the highlight of the day? Any testimonials to share?
The highlight of the day was the incredible student turnout and the positive atmosphere throughout the event. It was especially rewarding to see so many students, including a large number of first years, get involved so enthusiastically in a cause that extends far beyond the university.
Many students reflected on how valuable it was to be part of an event that felt both meaningful and enjoyable. For preclinical students in particular, it was a great opportunity to connect with senior peers in a relaxed environment while contributing to melanoma awareness. Overall, the day created a strong sense of unity, purpose, and community.
Why do you choose to support the Australian Melanoma Research Foundation?
We chose to support the Australian Melanoma Research Foundation because of its strong commitment to advancing melanoma research, improving patient outcomes, and raising public awareness. Given AUDPS’s strong focus on dermatology and plastic surgery, supporting this cause was a natural choice.
Melanoma is highly relevant in our field and remains one of the most common cancers in Australia, so contributing to research and awareness efforts is a meaningful way for us to support better prevention and future treatment.
What is your advice for others wanting to make a difference?
Our advice to anyone wanting to make a difference is to start small and get involved in causes they are passionate about. Whether it’s participating in events like Melanoma March, raising awareness through social media or volunteering your time, every contribution matters, no matter how big or small.
It is also important not to underestimate the value of simply showing up. Taking part in events like these not only supports important causes, but also helps build community, inspires others around you, and deepens your understanding of the real-world impact of diseases.
